Re: XR 400 Electric Start Kit

Thanks for the info Jason, seeing as I'll have to strip the bike down anyway your idea seems sensible. I have the bolt loose in the frame and can rotate it too but no amount of belting it (4 Lb lump hammer) will move it. Have left it overnight soaking in WD. not even bothered about the engine as I'll be fitting another but would be a shame to break the cases as they seem alright. Must post up some pics as altho' its been run out of oil the top end seems fine and only the piston, barrel and probably the crank are ****ed.

Cheers

Then warm it up with a blow torch evenly all the way across the spindle length and then hit it with the big hammer

Re: XR 400 Electric Start Kit

Thanks again Jason, my next door neighbour has a gas torch and will strip the bike some more tomorrow if it doesn't budge. Will have to remove the suspension and rear wheel, then if I tip the thing USD I'll hopefully be able to heat up the engine case. I'll report any findings in a new post!

Ta!

Doing another at the mo' so my other xr400 (with 'leccy start) will be for sale soon, watch this space.....................

Why aren't more people doing this? It's a straight swap with just some fiddling with the electrics to incorporate a battery and solenoid.

I'm trying some lifepo4 batteries and a custom regulator which i'll use for starting the bike.

Finding a trx engine may be a problem but i fortunately found one rather cheap but have had to wait 6 months to find a donor bike!

Now, how the **** do i get that seized swinging arm bolt out!!!!

haven't owned a dr350 suzi but they're fine as is the yammi ttr-250, i have one as a road bike and is super smooth (bucket and shim rather than silly heavy valve adjusters) and will do over 70mph just not as powerful as the xr but far more refined so more a trial bike than a motorcross bike.

hi the question i was asking is there an electric start kit that can be fitted to the xr or what other type of enduro / motocross bike has an aircooled engine and electric start??? I hate the radiators
joe.

Re: XR 400 Electric Start Kit

To answer your question YES, but easier and cheaper to fit TRX engine.

Air cooled bikes are Suzi DR350SEX, Yammi TTR-250 & Honda XL/XR/XLR 125/200/400. They're all good bikes the TTR being the most 'Modern' design and he XR400 being the most powerful. Both the TTR and the XR400 are TALL bikes but can be lowered.

I use a Honda XLR200 for 'Trailsy' stuff, a TTR for the 'Commute' but would make a v.good trials machine (check out Brian Sussex) and the XR400 for full on off road stuff. Had an electric start XR250 but was not impressed.

Not sure where you are but best to try before you buy so maybe join your local TRF!
