    XR 400 Cam Chain Tensioner

    Hi Guys,

As i have had so much great advice from thre forum i thought i would ask for some once again!!!

Having recently re built my engine after a new piston i have developed a rattling only on acceleration and deacceleration which sounds like the cam chain. I have heard a simular sound on a KLE 500 i used to ride.

I have checked the valve clearances and they are all spot on, so i am now thinking could it be the tensioner or indeed the cam chain guides that are worn or both

The tensioner is fully operational, in that it retracts and springs forward on release, so could it be the cam guides?

The bike has just clocked up 18000 Kms, of hard off road work so any advice you would be able to give would be very much appreciated.

I have had a quick look in the book and realise the clutch cover has to be removed and the basket taken out to get to the rear guide securing bolt, so any top tips that you would be able to give would be very much appreciated, also does any one know the approximate cost of the tensioner and two new guides?

    As always many thanks.

    Jay

Re: XR 400 Cam Chain Tensioner

That sounds like a cam chain rattle, If you remove exhaust downpipes, then undo the 2 bolts securing cam chain tensioner in place. Now with the tensioner loose you should not be able to push it back home to cylinder without releasing tension on the adjuster screw, if you can push it home, then your cam chain needs replacing.
