    Annoying rattle

The XR is at it again!! Its had its head re done and thats all fine, but now I have aquired an annoying rattle. Im hoping its not too serious and Andy at my local bike shop is wondering if its something on the balancer shaft. It seems to start once the bike has been warmed and done a mile or so and its coming from behind the left sidecovers of engine. I just hope its no internal bearings that needs a full engine re build

Not very lucky with that bike, are you.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

The only thing in that side is the fly wheel and the stator, the fly wheel is held on by a big nut perhaps its loose after engine build?

    Re: Annoying rattle

Well bike shop has rang today and given me the fabulous news that the cure will not be located until its had a full engine strip down

Guess I am looking at a bill of £400 plus to get this sorted. Either that or its put it back together and sell it for what I can, which would be ridiculous amount and a total loss in the great scheme of things.

Pretty bummmed off now. Its making me want to out it once done and get something that seems to have a better reliability record or newer with a history

    Im just anti XR today!!!

your gonna be hard pushed to find a more reliable bike than an xr,why dont you just get a manual and do the work yourself.dunno how handy you are with the spanners but we all have to learn somewhere and these xr's are simple to work on,failing that there was a bottom end on ebay from a breakers yesterday

Hmmmm I am a complete numpty as a mechanic. But seen the bottom end on e bay and its close to home, just wonder if its any good. I guess its exactly the same as my model nothing changed on XRs over the years did it???

    Re: Annoying rattle

Well ,just come back from bike shop and after a chat with Andy, Im not goin for the bottom end on e bay. At the end of the day why has a perfectly good engine been split? Im not qulified enough and dont have the resources to re do a second hand engine. The £180 I would pay for it will be a large part of having mine done.

Hopefully when mine is completed, it will be bordering on a new engine, so thats the route I have chosen. I really love the XR and if it gets too expensive the first thing to go will be the XT!! I know which bike I would rather keep. I dont think it will come to that though, and hope not. But I have really missed the XR, guess its got under my skin
