not unusual, especially if you stall it ! gave up in the end , mikuni carb conversion totally transforms starting and performance ! did run mine with bigger idle jet which improved starting , but was still a pig.

I've never had problems hot starting my XR,but my Husky SM reduced me to a wreck, when kicking the buggery out of it,on a hot summers day,in full leathers..............

Just open the throttle so its a knats cock away from closed and then try to start it, just enough to open the butterflies in the carb, failing that back to valves and carb adjustments

    Thanks for the replies.
Someone has told me to replace the stator as this can breakdown when hot, was also going to change the carb over to a mikuni.
    Thanks

Re: Xr600 starting problem when hot!!!!

I'd start by checking all of the carb settings. If you need to use choke to start a hot engine I would check the air mixture screw setting at the front of the float bowl...it may need turning it out a half turn to make it richer. Check also the float height.
If the bike is a pig to start when hot check the tappet clearances & the plug cap resistance...if the resistor in the plug cap goes infinite resistance when hot it will cause a misfire as well.

Re: Xr600 starting problem when hot!!!!

Funny this, after my 500cc Goldie I find the XR600 easy to start, half choke from cold always goes second kick and no choke when hot and it usually goes second kick.

    Simples

I would be on the look out for air leaks, dirty air filter and maybe the plug needs changing, I always change the plug in the Goldie if she gets dificult to start, works wonders...

plug cap resistance should be 5 ohms or less for 95% of all jap bikes
