New XR400 Owner - rear preload

I have just bought a 2003 XR400. It needs some tidying up. I have been away from dirt bikes for 15 years - need some help/advice.

I need to adjust the preload on the rear. I am 98kgs. Can you do it with taking bits off? Do I need a c-spanner to do it?

Also what engine oil are you using?

Hi mate welcome to forum. You adjust preload by winding the 2 rings around the top of the spring down so a c spanner is required. Problem being it's a pain in the arse you'll have to take the seat and sub frame off to get a spanner in there, i just use a long pin punch and hammer an knock it around. Engine oil 10/40 semi synthetic, do not use fully synthetic you'lll end up with a slipping clutch i tend to use Rock oil quardian or Silkolene, but the silkolene is a bit better quality but does cause it to smoke slightly on start up ( it does the same on my other bike) but apparently this is common, but it doesn't happen with the rock oil.

THanks for the advice. I may get the shock fully serviced.
