carb prob

hey all, having some carb issues on my dads old 79 xr 185... cant open the throttle all the way without it bogging or sputtering. any ideas what it may be.

Does it smell very rich at the exhaust?

I had a similar problem on Saturday with my XR250.

The bike ticked over ok, however any throttle and it was cutting out as if starved of fuel!

Luckily I was out with some experienced guys, the main jet was blocked, we took the lower chamber off the carb, removed and cleaned the jet, put it back together and bingo!

Took about 20 mins on the mountain side, so be alot easier in a garage with a stand and a decent tool kit!

Worth a try as a starting point.
