Need help with exhaust on an XR6.

    Hi,
My first post so here goes…..I’ve had my XR600 for about two months and it was load when I got it. I am going to pull it apart and powder coat frame etc etc. The previous owner had made up the exhaust and I would like to fit an oval FMF pipe. I need to know if there is a separate two into one section as standard to allow connection to the single FMF/standard pipe. Hope that makes sence.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Kempouk
The engine is a 1990, not sure about the frame. It has two tubes from head that sweep around the block and go into a horrible welded up home made pipe(it has got original clamps x2).
It looks like the headers are standard and the two into one bit would have been cut off the standard muffler and has been welded onto the crap tailpipe.

I have pics. but can't load them up !!!

Just been looking at other XR6's and the pipes seem to sweep around, join together level with the barrel and then go on as a single tube to meet up with the tube to the tail pipe. I bet I have got the only year model that has done this ( Doh!)

check this post out, Unusual exhaust

in 1988 Honda designed an exhaust that had twin front pipes that lead into a twin ported muffler, this design lasted for a year or so, and the they stopped it.
your pipe might have had this design but as the twin ported mufflers became more scarce people would either design there own (like your pipe) or just totally change the whole exhaust to the now standard two into one front pipe.
this made getting new mufflers easier to get hold of, the good news is that all xr front pipes up until 1998 should fit your bike.

yep they are the twin down pipes for the 1988 xr, you wont get a back box for them for love nor money, my advice is to grab the two into 1 front pipes asap.

check out my bike pic here and look at the pipes.
