    New buy - XR 650R

    Hi guys
Just thought I will share with you the joy of having a new toy.
It's an XR 650R 2002 with just 650 miles from new ( has been on SORN since 2005 ).
My plan is to convert it to a bit more overland bike than it is at the moment.
The Acerbis 24 fuel tank will be on order very soon but my questions really are:

    - what bash plate should I buy ( CRD / B&B ) or should I stick to the OEM one?

    - what handlebars ( must be 22mm, higher profile than standard )?

    - indicators, the exhaust side one is slightly melted.
TBH I hate the look of OEMs anyway so is there any neat / fairly straight forward fit replacement ones you'd recommend?

    - mirrors ( missing ), I've seen some "foldable" ones recently which I really like unles there's anything else which would screw in place of OEMs, perhaps other alternatives

    Now the engine.
I was told that the oil has been changed recently ( it's clear though ) but I want to put some fresh one.
What oil / how many oil filters do I need ( sorry, been with KTM's for too long ) / air filter - do I need to buy the pre-oiled one / spark plug / plug cap / spark plug tool?

I'm sure for some these questions might sound stupid but forgive me, don't want to ruin such a nice bike.
Perhaps someone has the .pdf manual I could have e-mailed?

Well in a few words any info / help much appreciated.
    Cheers

    Pawel

J's got a 650 he'll be able to give some info. I don't think it has an oil filter does it,just a strainer in the gearbox.

there was another 650 man once but he's not been seen for a while.
lucky find though on the bike, where do you find these, first the twin then the ktm now this, your a polish mason aren't you,or sniffing them out like a Służba Bezpieczeństwa

I buy genuine Honda oil filter as some factor ones can collapse, there are two oil strainers in the frame, I use synthetic engine oil and change it 900>1000 kms, it may be over zealous at changing it but its a bonkers engine and they can over heat if there is no air flow so I keep the oil clean. check out your wheel bearings and seals on your spacers. if you use it off road buy 2x 1lt Sig bottles and fill them with petrol as you will run out honest because these bikes leak petrol out of the carb breather whilst on tick over on steep hills.
Some sites to look at and read,
    The Pig Pen
    XR650R FAQ
PRACTICE KICK STARTING AS THEY ARE A BITCH when stalled in technical rocky, muddy ditches or on a hill.

And last if you drop the bike turn the fuel off ASAP or if you park it on a hill will save you loads.

    Nice bike Pawel,
Its just a shame shes water cooled as I've got an Acerbis 22lt tank for sale, for the old air-cooled bikes. She's got a bad green paint job, but will be a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Re: New buy - XR 650R

    Many thanks all you guys!

I've ordered some Honda consumables and Acerbis tank ( thanks for the offer Pieeyedpiper - different fixing ).
I'm planning to stick Pirelli MT21's and see how it's gonna perform off-road on them.
I was also thinking about black powder coated rims, to make it look like this one ( I don't want to pay for genuine Excels ):

Can anybody recommend any wheel powder coaters / builders in the London area?
I did a basic search on the net but they're all rather far away from London.

MT21s will be great I love mine although they do fill up with mud in the Welsh bogs and stop effective traction, sayin that they have always pulled me home they just dont do it as well off road as an AC10 my other spare wheel for the xr has one of these, but then the AC isnt as good on tarmac especially wet, but I just swap over depending on ride Im doin.
Mt21 on front has been on 4000 kms and still grippin
