Wouldn't worry too much,it was a TE, notorious for throwing their guts and when a crank costs over 400 quid,it does make for an expensive rebuild

ok I can see how the bill was so expensive now, but I want to put a call out to anyone who has used omd90 in their bike to see what they though of it. Why oh why am I still worried about putting that golden liqiud in my engine??????

    Great thread!

And I've just checked online and the halfords diesel oil is cheaper than motorcycle oil, so I'll buy a gallon of that next time

    Re: XR 4 oil consumption

I have just changed the oil on my xr400 ,so thought I would collect and check how much old oil was in the bike.

There was still 1.6lt of old oil I collected.
Not including the small amount lost when the old oil fillter was removed.

    I have only used silkolene 10/40 ,which I change ever 1000 mile's

I was told by a friend that if you ride a XR400 hard from cold it will burn a small amount of oil.
Could this be the problem ?

More likely to be valve stem seals, nothing to worry about though just keep topping her up from time to time

    Maybe Dazzer.
I did a good long ride yesterday and it was topped up prior, checked the night before after a half hour road run. I would say it has used aprox 100ml yesterday judging by the drop on the stick straight after I got home. The run was a good day out of 150 kms.

OK, just curious though... Valve stem seals won't cause the oil to turn black will it, black oil is from gas seeping past the rings?
