    Front down pipes Help!!!!

Ok People, having made myself feel good by making up a new set of front engine hangers and saving a few bob I felt good.
Today I got a tug off the police (nice fellows one a trail rider the other my instucter on the bikesafe course I did) anyway bike passed its scrutineering Phew (knew she would).
Then the exhaust decided to brake a bracket (the clamp that pulls the headers into the cylinder head) on the left down pipe, now my problem is I dont think these detach from the pipes????????
Ive looked on ronayers at the microfiche and there is no seperate part number for the clamps.
Does anyone know if these do slide off If so I will fabricate some new ones. I hope they do because the down pipes are in ace condition and dont need replacing. Anyone got any ides/knowledge. Cheers all will look at any replies tommorow morning and reply to them as nessasary.

no they dont come of, the only way to get them of would be to cut the pipe.

    Re: Front down pipes Help!!!!

Bugger sorry guys, its a 1999 XR250R uk spec bike, looking at the pipes without taking them off it does look like the clamps are put on during manufacturing and then the pipes are flared out.
The balls ache is, is that the pipes themselves are in really good nick and could easily last another 10 years.
What i,d like to try and do is un-flare the pipes by putting three snips in the flare and bending back in then sliding off the clamps and collars, then making up new clamps and collars, re-flaring the pipes and reassemble.
Sounds like ive answered my own question I know but was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem.
Ive looked on lings site and they do the header pipes for £161, which isnt bad if i had the money and seems a waste when only a 10p collar has rusted away.
    What do you think then.

Thats the route i would take

Obviously weld up the saw cuts afterward, . . . . or braze the new collar in position, filling the cuts with braze. . . . . . . . . depends on the equipment you have access to.

Luckily a fully equipped workshop at work and a decent gararge with tools etc at home, will have to see if I can lend some job specific tools from work then i can do most of it at home over the weekend, instead of in work time, bloody boss is back on monday so wont be able to slope off too much next week.

Instead of cutting or damaging your existing downpipes, why don't you make two half collars and fit them one on top of the other like the very early Honda's. Photo enclosed - sorry about my technical drawing detail .

yea surely theres gotta be a way of making a new clamp / repairing the old one, then putting it together in two halfs, either as suggested above or maybe by welding it once its on the pipe?

DAZ MAX might well take you up on that offer, just trying to figure out exactly how they work, I must be abit thick toay, the only other problem I,ll have is the actual collar that the clamp presses against to seal the exhaust to the head. If you see what I mean.
