hi chaps, just back from my jaunt round west of ireland, 1800 miles in a week on my xr650r ,with my mate vince on his bonneville. warm, bright and sunny every day. set off from chichester and went across country, salisbury plain, wiltshire, a short burst on the hideous motorway to cross the severn bridge. then on through the brecon hills, on the best surfaced roads i have ever seen, then down to pembroke for the ferry. then Rosslare to west cork.A brilliant week riding round the wild peninsulas of west of ireland, on roads vince described as grey trails, small strips of tarmac either side of the grass in the middle!.My new avon distanzias were superb in all conditions. if anyone decides to go, post me for info.

Great you enjoyed it here ,the grass in the middle of the road is there to extend the life of enduro tyres.

I lived near skibereen years ago, i had a suzuki gt250 with motocross handlebars, those boreens honed your biking skills!! 15 years old, the pain in the arse english boy thrashing around Ballydehob and Skibereen!!

Sounds like quite a trip!!I didnt think a big thumper like an xr650r would handle such a long trip.I bought an xr650r supermoto a few months ago and have only been taking it out on short 10-20 mile blasts.Gonna have to plan a longer trip post haste!

go for it, but get the seat modified first. im having a gel insert fitted, whilst keeping the original shape, look of the seat. the bike performed perfectly and was great on the mountain roads. changed oil and filter soon as i got home. met a guy with an xr650r in skibereen who was about to go on a trip to asia on his!. he had done some clever stuff, uprating the electrics and lighting, fitting a battery and plug in for gps, phone charger, etc. the bike still looked original.
