HT lead and caps are cheap, probably best to replace anyway especially if the shock recieved was in the dry..

well the lead is moulded into a black box that is attached to my frame with 2 wires coming out of it
Yuck, I hate it when they mold it into the coil..
You can get replacement coils with leads cheap enough
Any current leaking is more than likely shorting out to the engine than weakening through resistance hence I suggested the sleeve to insulate the lead for testing purposes
my dad told me to cover the ht lead in electrical tape to tost it properly is that the sort of thing you mean
Heres a thought that might be wide of the mark, but hey.
My XR250 had been stood for months,(I know trains are unreliable but that is stretching things) and I could not get it started. Was getting a spark and a petrol wet plug, so was stumped.
I met a guy who had a 400 with the same problem. An old chap he knew with old BSA experience told him to tip the bike right over to the left, with handle bar almost touching the ground, until petrol runs out of the carb. Stand the bike up and on the 3 kick it'll start. Mine spluttered on the 3rd and took 4 more kicks to get her running. Unbelievable.
It appears when stood the petrol evaporates, leaving an air lock. I know yours was probably stood for only a few mins. or so, but in hot weather who knows?
Long shot, but worth a try.
Al.
it does sound a long shot but anythings worth a try
ok then what would you suggest
For pure test a simple piece of plastic or rubber pipe, if it works then replace the coil/lead as you don't want to run it for any length of time with plastic/rubber in situe because of the generated heat
Your definately getting a good spark?
If you remove the plug after trying to start the plug is wet with fuel?
Compression;Do you know roughly what it should feel like with your thumb over the plug hole?.Sure you have good compression? You should feel it sucking and pushing.
Check your air filter isn't blocked.
If all this is good try bump starting it.(preferably by finding a good hill to roll down, get as much speed* going as you can before popping the clutch in second)
*within the limits of the gears rev range.
