What do you mean by "plug the headlight in" and "loss of power". Do you mean switching the headlight on? and by loss of power do you mean engine or electrics?

Check your Alternator, It sounds like it is not producing enough current to run your lights and engine.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Yeah have a go with the alternator. Although that gives power to the coil for the plug which in turn makes the fuel air mixture go bang, so if you are losing loads of power something is draining away that power big style to affect the plug.
What way is the power being lost, I would think that if you are losing a spark then it would intermittant, (abit like a car only firing on three cylinders).
I,m rambling I know just thinking whilst I,m typing trying to get my head round your problem.
