Starting XR250 after 3 weeks away

    Hi All,

I know the starting issue threads keep re-appearing but just go back from Africa and guess what, tried to start "the lovely" and nothing !!!, Well, very little. Ran for a short time on full choke but any revs/choke reduction induced a stall and then nothing. Tried fuel tap off to clear the carb......

So, having used all of ther threads.....

    1. Tried all starting variations : choke, no throttle.......
    2. Checked spark - all OK
    3. Dismantled carb and checked for blockages (oh yes, does the breather pipe just head northwards and remains unattached to anything ??) - all clear
    4. Put it all back together
    5. Kick started and got the impression now of little or reduced compression. Certainly no kick-back as normal and certainly no sign of life.

Up until this point, it started reasonably well, more difficult if left for 1-2 weeks. Ran very well with no noises. Didn't burn oil, plenty of pull.....all AOK, at least that was my impression.

    Can anyone help . PLEASE

Can't believe it's head/valves/rings as everything was great before my Hols - unless you know different ??

    Many thanks

    Stu

I had the same problem when i left my 400 for three weeks luckily i live on a hill so bumped it but it didnt burst into life like it does normally but started firing and eventually picked up. left from week to week its always second or third kick
I think it must have been pissed off because i hadnt been out to play for a while

Open the carb drain screw. Turn the fuel tap on and let fuel drip out the drain screw and all over the floor for a few seconds.

Close the carb drain screw and try starting with choke on but absolutely no throttle.

The fuel in the tank is always fresher than the stuff in the floatbowl and this way also fills up the carb ready for a start.

Guess who had a kickstart DR350 which hated starting if left for longer than a few weeks.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Just tilt your bike over to one side (handlebar almost touching the ground), petrol will overflow from the carb. Stand her up and kick over on full choke but don't touch the throttle. Will start within 3 kicks, GUARANTEED.

    Well all,

Tried the guaranteed approach this am and no joy BUT then ran like f_ck down hill and "she" / "the bitch" spluttered into like and is now running like a dream.

We learn something new everyday and I'd like to thank all of you for your input. Hope my patience can last with "the lady"

    Cheers all.

Mine does that after a a couple of weeks of standing, its almost like you have no compression when kicking her over, can only put this down to the oil draining away from the rings and allowing the compression to drop, i just kick mine over loads to get the oil back up around the engine manually then try with the choke etc and then she starts, dont worry if it was working fine when you left it then it will work ok when you get back to her, like you said they all have theyre own quibbles.
