    O ring versus standard chain

I just picked up a DID chain and sprocket set that I ordered from my local supplier here in france - it wasnt till i went to fit it that i relised the chain was not an o ring - the dealer told me that it is a good quality chain and suitable for the bike and offroading. It does say motorcross on the packaging.

Im not intending to do much road milage but is a standard chain any good or should I swap it for an o ring. What are the advantages of an o ring?

    any advice?

Yea they use non o ring chaing in moto X because they are trying to squeeze every last brake HP out of their bikes, and they will thoroughly clean then regrease their chains after every ride.
An O ring chain is slighlty less efficient, coz of the drag of the Orings, but you never have to regrease them as the grease is sealed in every joint. You just have to WD40 them to stop em rusting.
Get an O ring chain unless your happy to clean, degrease and lube your chain regularly.

Non O ring chains are used on race bikes of all sorts and if you're happy to clean and re-oil your chain every time you use it keep it. I'd suggest swapping it for the O ring type.

You will have to ensure that it is oiled on a regular basis and get a tin of grease. The type that you place on a stove and boil the chain in.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Re: O ring versus standard chain

Ive been using non O ring chains for a couple of years now, mainly cos I was a bit short of reddies when I needed a new C&S set, havnt looked back yet, have just got over a years use out of my non O ring chain, thats a 35 mile round trip commute to work every day taking in a couple of lanes on the way, in all weathers and most weekends going out for a trail ride, my chain gets an oil once or twice a week with engine oil, and thats it.
Also I gave up on using the alloy sprockets and went for steel ones and once again my rear sprocket has lasted the same length of time as my chain , and is only now starting to hook up on the teeth.
Really wouldnt worry about using a non O ring chain if i was you, enjoy the saving in money that its giving you instead.

Well I think I'll keep it on there for the moment - but will get myself an o ring chain to replace it when it looks like the time is right -may be before i go to play in the sand in morroco later in the year!

You must have an oily trouser leg Transporter!!

    Thanks all for the advice

Re: O ring versus standard chain

Put an o-ring chain on my trials bike It lasted over 3 years and went on two ov my bikes and never had to replaced a sprocket, where as a normal chain would only last 6 months and wreck the sprockets at the same time!! O-Ring all the way
