    think my xr is dead

hi all, i was out riding today with my friend on his ccm when i was accelerating up a hill and the bike started to hold back like a fuel starvation feeling.
then the bike started to make a clonking noise from the engine and she just locked up with a clunk clunk clunk noise from the engine.
my fears were brought home when i tried to kick her over but the kicker was just rock hard.
i can put it in gear but the wheel just locks so it is seized up big time.
it has only done 400 miles since the last service so the oils was fine, i checked it before i went out and it seemed ok.

OK here you go, what do you think could have gone wrong and being a 1988 xr600 where would you suggest i start to look for some spare parts for her.
I'm gutted as the bike is a real classic and very clean for the year, it has just had a new original exhaust and a new stator fitted, so i would like to get her running again.

would a new engine be worth considering.
    thanks for reading this.
any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks.

You won't know what's up 'til you've stripped it but it sounds like it'll be expensive. Take it apart then post back what you find.

A crank can be rebuilt. A new rod can be fitted. A rebore can be carried out and a new piston fitted. You may need some or all of these.

If you rebuild your engine, you'll know exactly what you are getting. Buying a used engine is always a real gamble as you could fit it and find yourself in the same position again in a few weeks then you're back to square one.

Mine had much similar sympton when my conrod snapped, i wouldn't and didn't consider a new engine rebuild the one you got they're easy to work on and get the parts from david silver on the 2-3 week wait as they are a lot cheaper but you have to ask for the 2-3 week price

I'm guessing you can push the bike along out of gear?

If so, as above. Head and barrel off to see what's gone wrong. If it's as clean as you say then rebuild.

Its an old engine so could be anything. whip the engine out and strip the top end, to get an idea.
Rebuild your own engine rather than buying an unknown engine.

Alternatively, make sure you strip the oil pump down to its component parts and check the rotors and the casing for scoring, pitting, wear and correct clearance. Most of the time the oil pump will not need to be replaced. The most I've ever had to do is fit new rotors to an original pump.

Re: think my xr is dead

    cheers guys for the replies,
i been looking through the workshop manual and it says i need to get certain tools IE cam chain tensioner holder, a knock pin puller set, slider shaft, remover weight, valve guide reamer, valve guide driver ect ect, are all these necessary as i don't think i need to strip the whole head to bits.
mabe drop the valved to de-coke them.
what say you chaps and chapets.
it looks a tad daunting when you look in the manual.

ps: are all these parts still available as i looked on that dave silver website and he only had a handful of bits listed for a 1988 xr.
might be worth giving him a call i suppose.
