Well it depends on the 14 year old though an xr is a great choice for 1200 quid you can have a brand new crf 70 or 1700 quid a 100 both of these bikes are cool/safe and good value if/when you upgrade.....have a look at

    Re: first bike

I agree but the CRF 230 is the bike to go for and has just been used for Enduro Africa progamme shown on Sky TV, and ridden by Royals no less. Last year they threw one into the swimming pool after the event and had it running again in less than an hour. Sadly it is no longer being imported by Honda. It is electric start, disc front drum rear, air cooled and almost indestructable. Some have been made road legal with lights, horn speedo etc and if you could find one of these one's you could then strip it down and SORN it for field riding, and put it back together when he is old enough to ride it on the road. They do come up for sale 2nd hand occasionally, but get snapped up quickly, so they retain good 2nd hand value, although they were only around £2500 new anyway.
It has fairly low seat height, so is popular with shorter riders, and the electric start means it can climb, and keep moving through almost any conditions. It's very popular with Welsh Trail riders who are very shrewd and knowledgable when it comes to knowing what makes a good trail bike.
You can get upgrades for them too, such as suspension upgrades, exhausts, triple clamps, disc rear wheels so can be improved when you need it.
