best road tyres for xr400

Hi. Seems there are no green lanes near Worthing, West Sussex, so rather than change the bike (again...), I'm looking to keep for the road.
Question is - what are the best tyres to suit road riding for the standard 18/21 inch wheels?

Avon Distanzias
Metzeler Lasertec (maybe)

Some people don't like Distanzias saying they're not grippy in the wet.
Some people like Distanzias saying they are grippy in the wet

Tyre choice is often really down to personal preference, riding style and your own definition of best. Of course, if you are only going to be riding on tarmac, supermoto wheels and an oversized disc conversion are the way to go.

The DRZ has trailwings on it, after not liking them on the TA I fing them fine for the DRZ. Mind after getting used to knobblies, trailwings feel like a revelation

Could I use any road bike tyre on the rear that fits, just putting a tube in a tubeless tyre?

I have a Macadam but it's a front tyre. I know...but what would happen if I fitted it to the rear wheel as it's the same size tyre that I need.....

So, from "what are the best tyres" we've now gone to "can I put a tubeless front road tyre on the back with a tube in it"

It'll be illegal - not sure on points but a bald tyre is worth a few. It will invalidate your insurance. What would happen would largely depend on whether you get stopped by a copper or have an accident.

Legal issues aside, the chances are that the tyre would be okay if you fit it with the rotation the wrong way too - but do you really want to risk it?
