    Repositioning XR400 side stand

It was unpleasant to find a cracked side stand bracket on my XR400. So I thought how this could happen. I suppose it happened because I fall quite a lot and when the bike is dropped to the left side it leans on side stand which twist the bracket with quite a big torque. Now I cut the bracket so that the side stand moves to a better position and it leans more to a side fairing than to a stand.

The causes can be different but in my case I think it's the falling, cause I don't do like you . I just don't drop it but it lands quite hard to the ground and if the first point that takes the hit is side stand the forces to the bracket are much much bigger than when you get on the bike with side stand on ground as then the most of the weight goes to the ground through wheels. And bracket welding holds better like this way as well - the bigger welding lines are up and down and the shorter ones are from left to right, that means it is weaker if you bend it side to side than up to down.
See the third picture and imagine what happens if the bike goes down to left side and you stay on top of it
I'm not good rider and I fall at least couple of times with every ride as I want to know my limit

Glad to hear your not one of these people who think their riding gods and willing to admit a bit of ground contact now and again i'm just like you and have clocked up milage on the side panels as well.
I caught mine when it was a hairline crack although i think this is a common fault as everyone i know with an xr400 has welded the bracked. I have a spare frame and that has been re-welded as well. Nice job by the way

if you go through deep ruts the stand is forced back against the swingarm.i solved this by simply grinding away at the stand at the point it makes contact with the frame lug.as you know, the stand swings in and up so my mod allowed it to come in further and stop at a higher position.just like yours.i did the mod before the stand bracket cracked cos i watched xr's going into ruts in front of me and could see stand dragging on the side of ruts and didn't want to damage my loverly new shiny 400.

did need a slightly shorter spring as a result.
