Maybe try a 3/8 as it's a little smaller?

try a small stillson pipe wrench with a piece of tube on the handle,the harder you pull the tighter the grip,i recommend the record brand

Will go for an early morning shop tomorrow as a last resort before the garage, cheers for the tip

Stillsons didn't work, so down to the bike shop to get it off, it took them two guys on the end of a bar and a welding torch to persuade the bu9ger out. I don't feel quite so bad about my efforts now.

I was thinking of the screen in the engine.
