    An exhuast question!

    Hi all,
My xlr250 92' reg has rather scruffy and a bit loud carbon fibre 'end can',
was at my local garage at the weekend and while he said it was not the loudest, particularly at idle,
and he would have no problems putting it through a MOT (and he has not MOT'd a bike I had before because of a loud exhaust), he was not sure about the police if they has a decibel meter.
It is a bit loud, not ridiculous.
I'm wondering whether the end can off a xr400 would fit?
Someone is selling one which has had the baffle modified to a 20mm straight through type, and has no baffle/spark arrestor but reckons one will still fit.
Is this likely to be just as loud, would it make my bike run worse?

Particularly when coming down from speed(and were only talking 40/50mph) I get a slight 'bubbling' backfire, could this be caused by my current exhaust, therefore could this fix it?

    Re: An exhuast question!

Bubbling and popping on the overrun could be either a leak somewhere on the pipe(usually the joins) or an overly lean mixture due to the carb not being set up correctly for the straight through can.Check yr plug colour just in case

    Thanks

Think you may be right about the leak, not really much of a mechanic, so sorry for novice questions! Been round the exhaust system and think its leaking a bit(not a lot) from a few of the joins and also from where the carbon fibre meets the metal(metal a bit rusty).

May try building it up with some exhaust gum, won't be pretty but who cares!
Not sure how i'm going to fix the other joins though, maybe new gasket.

I'll check the spark plug colour too, found a page in a haynes manual from another bike.

Why worry about a exhaust can fo the MOT test Or being caught with a loud can. Problem is an MOT only worth anyting when it's on the ramp being tested. You can geet your ticket (mot) pull out the garage have a bulb blow get pulled £30 fine. I've never known any of my local dealers fail bikes for loud aftermarket exhausts. If they were to do that they'd never pass a bike as the first thing everybody does is dump the original can and buy another. Also the xr400 pipes are exactly quiet

Its not the MOT I'm worried about, as my local garage will MOT when time comes, its attarcting to much attention from the cops around town.

I love the sound of loud exhuasts, but hate attention from cops, my VFR is really really quite(standard) and I like it that way, gives the impression of a sensible rider

How about some of this stuff?...Vegas Exhaust Packing

    it says ...
Vegas exhaust packing. Quality product to help save our sport, keep your bike quite & improve performance. You will need one pack for 2 strokes & 2/3 with four stroke bikes.
Can see it improving performance myself, but maybe at least keep it quite?
Much cheaper than a new end can.

Checked part numbers on ronayers.com and seems the xr400 exhaust won't fit, but could be wrong?

Got a haynes manual on its way, £10.50 of ebay inc P&P! so should be less questions soon
