    CRF250 mufflers on the XR250

Hi, just got hold of these and I'm going to put them on my trusty '85 XR250; will add some pics and video link when they're on.

They're practically new as the chap I bought them off put a Pro-Circuit system on his CRF bike when he got it new and kept the Honda system as a spare.

It's purely just an excuse to fiddle around with the bike, as 'er indoors is wrapped up in 'X'-tremely Crap Factor and all the other brain rotting ******** on TV.

If it ends up looking sad or causes running problems then off they'll come.

Was toying with the idea of painting them black; happy to hear anyones views and thoughts.

Re: CRF250 mufflers on the XR250

You will be doing well to make them fit a XR 250.

By the time you have finished butchering them and the bike, there won't be much left of the original items I should think. You may be able to fit just one on the right, but the left hand side of a Xr is just not built to take a silencer, you will have to at least, bin the LH sidepanel, and weld an exhaust mounting, on to the frame.

I see Honda has quietly decided to stop using twin exhausts on the CRF's this year, so that tells me any benefit there may have been was extremely minimal.

I hope you are handy with a hacksaw and a welder or you know someone who is....good luck.

A cheaper and more beneficial modification to make to a XR 250, is to take the cylinder out to 280 cc's with a new piston and jetting to suit. This boosts low end torque and gives a slight horsepower improvement.
Sorry to be negative...maybe I am just older and/or wiser.

    Hi Xman, you make some bonafide comments;

The cutting/welding part isn't a problem, I recently just finished a spell of working for an American company where I was welding the axles for the trailers on HGVs so the welding will be okay.

I'll probably bring both mufflers inboard slightly as you are indeed correct that the left side-panel isn't as "bulgy" as the original muffler side..

Here's a picture from a chap who's already done the same and a link to his thread with more info/pictures.

Re: CRF250 mufflers on the XR250

Hi all, here's my 1985 XR250 with CRF250 dual mufflers.
I've done this little exercise for no particular reason other than I saw danwill91 on another forum had done the same with his 2003 XR250 and I thought what the hell, it's something to do

I haven't welded anything on the frame and so if I want to, I can put the normal exhaust back on.

The immediate problem I found straight off was the middle linking pipe was too long where it joins the header pipe. The gap between the tyre and linking pipe was close. I cut off a section from the CRF bit and then welded on the same bit from the original 1985 muffler. The CRF exhaust gasket that goes between the header and linking pipe was a perfect fit where it goes on the 1985 header pipe. I painted the linking pipe with some high temperature black paint.

I wanted to make sure there was enough clearence between the rear tyre and linking pipe when the suspension was compressed. There is plenty of clearence but that's not to say if I did a heavy landing, the tyre "might, just might" connect with the linking pipe, I only plod around on it anyway. I stood on the pegs and got the wifey to check whilst I jumped up and down, looked okay

I didn't have to weld anything to the frame to attach the mufflers; just fabricate some hangers from aluminium and bolt her up. You can see how the left muffler is attached in the video.

I haven't test ridden it yet.

Re: CRF250 mufflers on the XR250

Well I just took her for a short ride and well..........

I dont profess to have expert knowledge on the effects of modifications but, I can honestly say there is a very noticeable difference. Before as I went through the gears there was a distinct point when the engine revs would max out early. With the dual CRF250 mufflers and linking pipe on, she now well and truley powers through each gear a lot further. The torque curve is further through each gear as well. She pulls a lot,lot harder than with the old single muffler on.

It really has changed how this old girl performs
