Yes. The "R" isn't printed on the seat cover. All xr 400's are "R" models the letter after the "R" dictates it's year. mines an "RY" so it's a 99 model as the year goes back the second letter decrease by 1 letter

The changes in the bike from '96 to present are minimal and essentially it's the same bike for ALL years.

The changes are documented and I won't bother listing them as they're of little interest or use! Just goes to prove what a good design it was in the first place!
