    Question XR 400 advice

    Hi guys

had my bike a couple of weeks, really starting to get to know it now.

The gear lever is welded on is this normal? and is this a problem?

The decompression lever and cable is missing completly is this ok?

I have not had any probs starting or changing gear, but I did bend the gear lever in the lanes last weekend and had to bend it back, what would I do if it snapped can it be changed?

    Kris

The gear lever shouldn't be welded to the gear shaft. It may well be that the splines wore and the previous owner decided that instead of replacing the shaft by stripping the engine, they just welded it up.

The decomp lever and cable is useful if you have flooded the carb and need to clear the combustion chamber. I am sure that if you had a look on ebay you may well find one.If not I have a spare.

If the gear lever should snap off I think that you would have to grind off the remains in the hope that you can tidy up the gear shaft and bolt up another lever. A tip from many years ago was to push dress pins into the gap between the splines and then tighten down the mounting bolt.Maybe not a tip the previous owner had heard about.

It's only a seal if the bearings are sealed it's not really necessary i always leave mine in thought bit extra protection from water

For the price of a seal and 15 mins work you may as well sort it. Extra protection like Jason said.
