XR 250 Starting

Went through a ford the other day ('well' almost got through it).. Dropped the bike onto its side in the water and took us almost an hour to get the thing started again. Filter was dry so no water got into the combustion chamber but just refused to start.
Any mods to electrical connectors or relays needed to minimize this prob?

Friend followed me the other week and fell into the water on the air filter side. Took about 40 minutes to get it started ended up bumping it, just wouldn't start from a kick.
We now carry a toe rope to enable us to pull each other out of mud and help get the buggers started.
