    Re: xr 400 aftermarket exhaust

For racing (before I bought a KTM 450) I had an alloy bodied slip-on silencer made by DEP that was normally about £150. This only required a half notch on the needle and a slightly richer main jet than what I was running with the K&N,HRC needle, modified ignition & modified standard exhaust outlet pipe.

But it was louder, as in too loud for normal road use and gentle greenlaning, which is why I kept it for enduros only.

It really depends on how much you want to spend, what you want out of the new part, is it for racing or greenlaning, do you want to modify the standard exhaust, does it have to be as light as possible, will it pass the MoT, does it have a BSAU stamp on it for UK legality, etc etc.

moneys not an issue, what do you reckon to these hew header pipes with the power bomb in them, do they work?

i do a lot of greenlaning/offroading dont want it too loud but would like a nice bark to it.

id keep my origional pipe for the MOT

    Thanks

    Re: xr 400 aftermarket exhaust

I noticed some of the exhaust headers on the DEP stand at the dirt bike show earlier this year...but i'm not sure whether they make them for the XR400 or not. I think that the standard headers are very good...so long as you follow the norm & grind out the weld just inside the part that fits into the exhaust port of the cylinder head.
As the standard headers are stainless steel, albeit not the best quality stainless, I would tend to go for a slip-on silencer like the FMF Titanium 'Q' pipe. This gives a better power increase for less noise, but with a worthwhile 'bark' as you put it...don't want to offend the rambliers or PC Plod.
I think that people like Race-Spec do these, but then so do quite a few other MX shops.

I have an FMF 'Q' pipe onto my standard manifold... it is suberb.

Together with removing and smoothing the weld 'spatter' inside the exhaust manifold it develops great bottom to mid range improvements and lets it rev out as well. I used the jetting that FMF suggested with the mounting instructions and have had no problems starting. It is significantly lighter than standard with a subdued and better sound than any modification to the standard silencer, that lets you ride quietly in sensitive areas but sounds meaty when you ride hard. The silencer is also repackable and has a turbine core that prevents sparks (US forestry legal).
I use my XR400 for Hare & Hounds, enduros, trail riding and even motocross. I have made many modifications in the 4 years I have owned her but the FMF Q pipe is the single most value for money and best performing mod I couldn't do without.
I wouldn't bother changing the standard front manifold, there is very little improvement to be had here, and you are just wasting money changing it on a fairly standard 400. In fact you may lose torque if you go for a larger bore pipe.
I don't know whether they are still available new, I found mine 2nd hand in the classifieds of TBM, but 'Rush Racing' used to import them, I think they have been taken over by 'Off Road Only'.
