To get a better start.....what exact part number and where from for best price please.
Also any other hints to improve the start up - leads/ caps make any real difference?

Let it run out of fuel at the end of a ride (turn it off 1/4 mile from home) or undo the 17mm nut under the float bowl to drain out the stale fuel before your next ride...see if it behaves better with a carb full of 'fresh' fuel. Ignore all this if you use it daily![]()
There is only the OEM plug which is the NGK DPR8Z or the ND X24GPR-U.
NGK DPR8Z - Google Search

I use the long straight rubber plug cap with the resistor removed, keep the air filter clean (K&N type) & the tappets checked at each oil change.

Splitfire do a triple platinum plug for the 400
Cost about £11 and the part number is SF416C or for the Splitfire three, part number TP416C

Thanks guys for your help. I'll try the draining first, once this pesky weather warms up![]()
I bought a Splitfire plug for my XR400...once. I was assured that it was the correct one for my bike...it was rubbish. When I compared the NGK to the Splitfire they looked differant, & it took ages to fire it up...hot or cold. As soon as I put the cleaned up original NGK back in, instant/first kick from cold.
I then found out that the plug should have been for a DR350, so I sold it to a friend who had such a bike. He tried it & he said it made the bike gutless. He then did as I had done & put the cleaned up original back in & it was far better than the Splitfire.
They may well have changed things, but I am inclined to stay with the NGK after all the hassle.
PS. Don't buy the NGK in the red 'race plug' packet...you can buy them for half the price in the yellow packet, even though it's exactly the same plug.

Strange.I have Splitfires in my Scooby and my FZ and swear by them.
Also had them in my XR,KTM and Husky.
It's one of the first things I change.
A fatter spark doesn't usually mean less power/poor starting
Without sounding funny,I'm wondering whether they were gapped right.![]()
