    xr650r no airbox

    in the middle of fitting my engine back in my 650 sm after getting new piston and rod fitted, im thinking of taking out the airbox and fitting a cone k&n filter has anyone done this or think its a bad idea, wont be going off road got a 400 for that. cheers

    i did it on a ccm was ok untill it rained then ide be pushing it home best to fit cone filter inside the box if theres room

    Along these lines.
    I use my xr 250 mostly offroad. The airbox does take a lotta room and if there was a method of running the engine with some system that eliminated the need for the box, then on trail service / maintenance would be so much easier.

    yer did the same on my ccm i just put a dry charger over the filter no probs in the rain at all. i desided to go for it anyway he who dares n all that, i have took the airbox off and located the filter it looks good just need to take the locating clips off the airbox and fix them to the frame to take the side panel pictures up soon.

    There was a good article in TBM issue 61 Sept 2000 about SMing a XR650. No mention about the airbox though. I did remove the airfilter & fit a K&N type 'pod' as some people call them...bit open to getting covered in mud as it was on my XL185S back in 1988...but I wouldn't go this route again, considering the deep water of the Strata Florida.

    i wont be going off road on i have a xr400 for the lanes, i have'nt destroyed the airbox or fender so if it does'nt work i can always put it back even fitting a rear hugger would stop the water,never had a problem on the ccm and that just had a dry charger over the filter.
