    xr400 supermoto wheels-cheapest way?

    Seems £400- £600 is the going rate?

    But is it possible to get the rims and get a wheel builder to lace them up to the existing hubs? If so, where from?

    OR, are there any Honda road bikes wheels you can slot straight in?

    Don't want to spend a fortune as my '95 xr400 ain't worth that much...

    I may have a decent XR hub. Not sure yet, but hope to source a TA600 front hub to spoke to the 17 rim I have from my XR. I also have the caliper bracket that you'd need for the oversized disc.

    All depends on getting a TA600 front hub....

    Either way, I think you can do it. You could simply buy the parst you need and build yourself.

    Actually, have a look here: spoking a wheel is not rocket science, just something not to rushed.

    Thumbs up Re: xr400 supermoto wheels-cheapest way?

    My 17" wheels cost me £200, the tyres about £130, the front 13" disc about £100 & the rear disc about £40. They do look the nuts tho'...

    Thanks for replies so far.
    Where can I buy 17 inch rims that will be suitable for my existing xr400 wheels - are they 36/40 spokes?
    I don't plan to track it yet, so can I keep with the standard disc set up and just improve the pads ?

    PS how do I know if the crf450 wheels will fit and do they come with the brakes etc?

    PS my existing 18/21 wheels are lovely excel rims- will I get a decent price for these to finance the 17 inchers I'm after?

    If you are that tight for cash, I would simply sit and wait for a pair to come up on auction, online....

    If you don't mind buying secondhand, you may find that the cost may be the same as buying bits and building yourself, if not less, but with less hassle...

    My advice would be not to sell your existing pair. If you sell the XR on, you'll get hammered if you don't have original rims, IMO.

    Re: xr400 supermoto wheels-cheapest way?

    i contacted talon about using my standard xr400 hubs to turn into supermoto wheels, this is a copy of the reply email i got back from talon;

    Please see below prices as requested.

    17x3.50 silver rim = £156.80 + vat - coloured rim = £171.80 + vat,
    17x4.25 silver rim = £184.80 + vat - coloured rim = £199.80 + vat,
    17x5.00 silver rim = £203.00 + vat - coloured rim = £218.00 + vat,
    Spoke set = £53.90 per set + vat,
    Rebuild = £40.50 per wheel + vat.

    Many thanks

    so you work it out to see if you want to build some or buy some??????

    i have the fortune of having three sets of wheels, 1 set for mot use only, 1 set for off road use (bit bashed up!), and if i ever find my rear wheel, a set to butcher to make supermoto wheels!

    Ta.
    Spokes and labour costs seem reasonable, but nearly £200 for each rim? Guess I'll be looking for secondhand ones...

    i suppose the only good thing about using Honda hubs is you don't have to mess around with different disc's, you can use standard parts!
