    Oilburning

Hi folks, happy new year to ya all.

I have a 93 XR650l that was completely stripped and rebuilt last winter, powder coated frame, shockspring, XR650R wheels added and topend stripped and new piston and rings installed.Initially there were a few problems, (see other thread), but finally got it up and running and it seemd fine, back to how it should have been etc.
HOWEVER, after about a thousand miles i changed the oil and filter (and cleaned the mesh filter inside crankcase too) and since then it started burning a fair bit of oil. I dont know why, it seemed fine before the oilchange, i used the same type oil(i tihnk), Rock Oil semi-synth. Its like a bloody 2stroke once it gets hot, and i would say its using maybe as much as 500ml per 500 miles(thats a lot, isnt it?!). I was told by one much more knowledgeable than myself that the bore appeared to be fine which is why it wasnt rebored and oversized at the time.

Before i go tearing it apart and reboring it/new piston etc, has anybody any suggestions, any ideas what to check etc?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    regards

Best bet is to rechange your oil to the same as you have just used and don't forget your filter ,also are you absolutly certain your oilways in the head are clear ? if you did cock up oil types sometimes they realy don't like to mix.
Oh and if the oilways in the cam head are blocked remember ya got some in ya pistons to.
    Have fun Paul

Take the exhaust header off & have a look at the valve stems...do the same for the inlet manifold..
If either are wet/black, it's the valve stem seals that have gone.
Then look at the spark plug...if it's black & sooty more than the valve stems, it's piston/rings/rebore time.

appearances can be deceptive mate.when i was 18 i bought a T140v that was smokong heavily on the right cylinder.after a few months i decided to take a look at the problem.after the head and barrels were removed i pointed out to my father that the bore looked perfect and that there appeared to be plenty of meat on the rings.he removed the oil scraper ring from the right hand piston and placed it squarely in the top of the right hand cylinder(the barrels being sat on the bench).the scraper ring fell from top to bottom unemcumbered by friction.

all that work to the head, you should have had the bore measured for wear properly.good luck.
