    XR250 v XR400 v XR600

Intersted in getting a late 1990's XR, mainly for road use but some greenlaning.

Whats best 250/400/600? I've has a 1984 xl600r which was good on the road but now looking for something more modern.

I've tried a 250 which was great, heard the 400's are hard to start and mixed reaction to the 600.

A friend has an xr600 that he's used when we've been out greenlaning and it's a real handful on the slippery stuff. From an off-road point of view, lighter is better. I use a 250 just for the dirt but if you're mainly on road, the xr400 would be a good compromise and still (just) light enough to manhandle.

    If mostly road XR600
    If mostly trail XR400
If mostly tight tricky trails XR250
    I have 600 + 250.
Starting is just a knack you learn, but more difficult when bike's been lay down on it's side.
I recently got a KTM400exc for the trails, . . mainly for the electric start.

Oh, . . and welcome to the forum.

If i'm out with some newbies I use my XR400.
If i'm out with other KTM nutters I use my KTM450...better brakes, suspension,engine...& that electric start.

A friend has a XR600, but he has fitted his 17" wheels after having a go on my KTM & bought himself a KTM525. But then he is 6'2" & used to race enduros on his XR when I used to race my XR400.
