    xr650r valve clearance

    hi all, i know there is a thread covering this issue, but im paranoid about doing harm to my beloved xr!! im worried about the fact i seem to have cranked the engine over and over to find tdc. is the loud click i hear the decompression valve opening and closing? if i get it wrong whats the risk when i start the engine? Be gentle, its my first time with the feeler guage!!

    I too have worries on valve clearance, in fact they are about the one routine job I have done at the garage! They hardly ever seem to need adjustment though.
    On mine there is a click on the "false" compresion bit, I tend to kick through that then find the "real" one.

    I think they're adjustable tappets on the 650R, rather than buckets and shims. If I'm right then it's a really simple job, if you wanna do it yourself me and ollie will be happy to give you a hand , we've had enough bloody practice on his bikes to be really good at it now

    thanks guys, i have done them today, hopefully correctly! i have not fired her up yet, as i have stripped of a lot of parts for a real good clean up. repainting the exhaust,etc. ive also got some wolfman luggage so im fitting some neat little stainless d ring tie downs, ready for this years great escape to ireland! il let you know how she sounds on start up.
