    xr400 electrics help

    Hi everyone.
finally got my xr400 2000 model up and running (starts first kick after the carb was setup properly)
Problem now i have seems to be electrical gremlins.

    front and rear lights:
    bike started as normal:
front light comes on (seems dim), rear light doesnt coem on, then u pull either front or back brake and front light goes off and rear light comes on.

    horn doesnt work,

havent even attempted the indicators yet....

and if i flick the swith for high beam it doesnt come on..

also nuetral light doesnt come on...

any ideas on the break light situation?

    cheers all

1: All headlights on xr's are like high power candles so you may not have a problem there.

2: Xr400 don't have a neutral light, so that problems solved.

3: high beam have you checked both the filaments on the bulb are ok either try another bulb or test with a meter. I had asimilar problem with mine when i put a new rear mudguard on wired it correctly then found when i hit the brakes the headlight flashed, Someone had put the triangular 3 pin connector block for the lights behind the headlight together 133 degrees out so cables were configured wrong

4: brake light again check the bulbs are ok first then check the feed and that both switches are working. Light should work when you hit one lever either one also there is a 3pin connector under the seat for the rear lights check connections on that.

5: Indicators aren't needed for MOT so forget all about them it's only something else to get broke off when you drop the bike

    Hi
i have had the same problem on my 97 xr250, i found it to be (dunno what its called) but it fits on the top yolk throttle side!!! in a rubber sleve, its a black round thing!! i cut the outer wrapping off and removed the top where the two wires are conected, inside was a form of coil which was meant to be atached to the two wires coming out but the thin plates had broke off, i folded them back and put some rolled up wire under them to rase them to the conections then found that not to work so then put a penny under the resistor in the bottom, bit of a bodge job but it worked, as i have been trying to locate a new one for 3 months i thought a bodge was better than no lights, horn and tail lights work perfect now, YOU CAN NOT RUN ANYMORE THAN 35W headlight bulb else it over heats the unit which may cause a fire. hope this is helpfull

That switch that you're writing about sounds like your kill switch. The Honda switchgear for lights/on/off, high/low & horn are all in one unit on my OEM Honda switchgear like this...

hi its not a switch looks like a resistor!! only has two wires going to it, a green and a black, it must be some kind of voltage stabliser! might only be on mine as i dont have a battery to keep a constant voltage, what ever it is called it was broke inside now fixed all my problems have been solved, it all started with the horn not working but when i put my hand on it i could feel it tap inside when i pushed the button, tried new horn and tested for live feed and there was not one, i rewire classics cars all day and this had me the most confused i have ever been over a bit of wiring, if his bike has this (resistor) it would be worth looking at, thanks kittykatkiller
