That choke plate is interesting...I read an advert in an American dirt bike mag about the plates coming apart & depositing the bits into the engine...& what a bad mess it makes. So I bought one of the modified design plates from 'Precision Concepts'...

Ooooo that looks intresting, I was wondering about putting the extra holes in the one I made, looks like I'll have to get the dremel out and play again....

I know many people who either have xr's or have had xr's but have never heard of any problems with choke plates. Sounds a bit of a scam

The only reason my one was made into a 440 was because of what the choke plate did to the piston and barrel, but the original plate was put back minus the chewed up bits.

I was informed by the previous owner ( my brother ) that this was the second one he had heard of doing the same.....

Better safe than sorry I say

    Nice work.

I have been looking at the trellesport tyres as well - are they any good? How to they cope in the thick mud?

This is a common problem, and I've just done my 2000 XR400R
It took about 2 hours to drive the s/arm spindle out, after I soaked it in WD40 for a couple of days beforehand!

The retaining nut (r/h side) undid OK. Then I tried to undo/loosen the spindle and this took about 15 mins - some vigorous "tapping" with a hammer and a tight fitting socket & 18" bar The spindle finally moved a bit & after another 10mins coaxing was spinning reasonably OK.

I then used a mild steel drift (that was a couple of mm smaller diameter than the spindle) along with a 2lb club hammer - gently does it - to get the spindle out. Initially the b*****d wouldn't move, even though it would turn with the socket But after a while it had moved a couple of mm Another hour or so and it finally came out, thread still intact & servicable.

The "sticky" bit was where the spindle passes thru' the rear engine mount !!!!!
