I use mine for road trials aswell but have never had clutch issues with it are you using fully sythetic oil as that causes clutch problems

    Re: XR 400 Clutch

    What is your gearing?
Ideally, for trials work, you need to gear down and you should be able to ride at walking pace with your clutch out. This will prevent you having to slip and abuse the clutch too much, in tight sections.
This will mean you may have a limited top speed but LDT's don't require a high road speed between sections anyway.
The cheapest way is to go to a smaller front sprocket, and you may be able to keep the same chain length, but don't go much smaller than a 13 tooth sprocket as a 520 chain won't like going round the small radius.

    Re: XR 400 Clutch

I had a look through my Haynes & my Clymer manuals for the XR400 & they show the clutch lifting mechanism quite clearly.

honda right crankcase cover partsmanual fiche xr400r 99 xr400

Pull off the outer cover & have a look see that the part shown as #8 on the fiche diagram locates correctly onto the centre of the clutch pushrod, as well as the lifter itself & where it locates within the cover.

    Re: XR 400 Clutch

That part is a course oil filter...not a restrictor...see number 5 on the fiche...

Having looked in the Haynes & Clymer manuals as well as on the parts fiche, there dosn't appear to be any restrictor in the clutch mechanism area.

I'm not getting into a pissing contest but that statement is just pure rubbish, and I wish people on the internet would stop perpetuating the myth.
I have run Fully synthetic oil in every bike I've owned for the last 20 years and have NEVER had clutch slip. Work that out
