    Rear Sprocket Bolts

Help, I can't get the rear sprocket bolts out of my XR600, any ideas, I've tried plus gas, etc but still no luck. I've damaged one so thats the drill and chisel comming out, and ideas?

Oh and new ones, anyone got any ideas where I can get a set?

    Cheers

You may need just a bit of extra effort to release the threads. Try what I call a samson bar, like the normal ratchet handle but twice as long. Also use hexagon sockets rather than bihex they are less prone to mashing the bolt head/nut up. The bolts may well have been assembled with loctite etc. Regards bolts I rekon any good bolt (8.8 or above) with a locking nut will do unless the bolt has a special shoulder on it where it fits in the sprocket. Expect the bolt and nut to separate with a resounding 'crack' when it does. Be careful not to damage the hub/sprocket carrier if you have to get brutal.

The issue I'm having is that the Allen key hex is rounding off, I am using the correct size new Snap on allen key for a ratchet which is a damn good fit, but they are so tight the key is starting to round the hex

Thanks for the help though all appreciated

You can always drill the heads off the bolts remove the sprocket and then you will be able to get a set of vice grips on the stud and unwind it out. Any stainless bolts and nylocs will be ok plenty of places in plymouth

Good advice on the impact driver. I had a similar problem with brake disc buttons (cap screw button head screws) I found that with a conventional allen key the end that fitted the screw had a tendency to twist out of the screw head. So I found a tommy bar with a sliding square drive and then I was able to apply even pressure each side as well as push the allen bit hard into the screw and crack they were released.

You're doing it 'arse about face' mate

    Hold the allen head STILL

    and undo the NUT

i usually tap the spanner with a hammer first to break the seal on the threads then undo with the spanner

    Re: Rear Sprocket Bolts

I'd suggest the heat route...if the shank of the bolt has Loctite on it the alloy hub will warm & expand quicker than the steel bolt. When reassembling with new bolts put some copaslip on the countersunk part of the sprocket & bolt as well as on the shank of the bolt...this'll stop any corrosion. Then just put a dab of Loctite blue on the thread of the bolt. Hold the bolt steady with an allen key & do up the nut.

    Re: Rear Sprocket Bolts

I can get the bolts to spin in the noles no issues, I've drilled on out cos I've mullered the Allen hex and it seems that some joker has Stud locked the nuts on... That combined with corrosion in the threads and a bike thats been sitting for three years before I got hold of it isn't a good thing for taking stuff like this apart.

Thanks for all the help, I'm off to order some new bolts and am going to drill out the rest after the MotoGP...

    Happy Dayz

    Cheers
