The spring goes in the open end, and most have it stamped on them which way they go

    Are you sure?

I don't have a 400 and have never mauled with one but the spring on the crf450 filter does NOT go on the 'open end' of the filter and i cannot see it doing so on an xr400 either?

The 'open' front end locates on the back side of the outer cover and the rear of the filter is enclosed but with a recess for the spring to sit in which when offered up 'pushes' the filter out and makes the seal by compressing the 'o' ring

This xr400 diagram hints the same set-up Large Image for - 2000 HONDA XR400RY RIGHT CRANKCASE COVER - Honda Parts from Lings Honda

    Better wait for confirmation matey

Yeah apply the spring first, it's' a little tricky to balance into place before securing with the cover.
Ignor those other pieces on the diagram, they weren't there when I changed mine.
    Spring first then filter.

Make sure you changed the oil properly, Add over 1lt aprox 1.5lt may be a little more, run for 3 minutes then add the remaining 0.3lt to make a total of 1.8 lt 10/40 semi synth.

    Here's one I made earlier.

    Here's a tip mate

put a blob of grease in the recess on the back of the filter and when you sit the spring in there it stays put while you offer it all together
