Read the manual further down... there is a oil strainer behind the right hand engine cover right @ the bottom, you can see it on the picture below

Sorry can't make out where it is from that pic.
I checked this filter today.

Oh yeah I see it thanks!
And isn't that the gear selection mechanism showing there. It looks like the gear selector.

There're so many parts missing from Mausers engine in that photo you'd need to get a decent manual like the XR400R one from Clymer to know exactly what is where.
You mean like this baby!
There is no title in the index for oil filters.
It shoved in the text of engine section somewhere, all in different sub sections.
I can't bothered looking till I rebuild the whole engine.
Sorry to be a pest.
And yeah it is the kick start side. Very difficult to get too.

On pages 66 & 67 of my Clymer M320 for the XR400 it shows which way the paper oil filter goes in, how to do the strainer at the bottom of the frame tube & where to find the 3rd filter in the bottom of the engine below where the clutch lives.
In the Haynes manual it shows the same filters & locations, just from a differant camera angle.

K. Cheers I'll check it out for the next oil change.
