Absolutely everything was painted olive green, it looked like they disassembled the bike to paint everything. I have stripped the wheel rims and they are like new under all the layers of paint

The XR400's that have just been at withams appear to be red ones, with a thin layer of desert sand paint covering them, a lot of it had rubbed off, making them look tatty.

    Re: XR 400

Did you go there and see them then? What sort of money did they fetch?
I've regestered with them and for their news letter but apart from regular checking don't know if they inform you when they will have some more in.

My own bike is an ex- Army 250 ('97), and I know what you mean about the green paint ( reckon I've doubled the Nitromors pension fund), but underneath the bike is spot on, swing arm bolt aside . Only had 1100k on ther speedo, maybe not genuine, but why WOULD squaddies remove the speedo cable. I know from my own Army experience the kit is overserviced and way under used.

Thinking of selling mine and getting one of those Xr's or Harley's in army green. You will definitely stand out in the crowd and will have no probs with reliability.

Depends what the crowd is. They were painted green and black for camaflague purposes!

    Re: XR 400

I would advise you get the 400 - more fun off road and much more useable on road. In my experiance the major starting factor is having the tickover wound up faster than you want it ( Can be done by hand with the plastic nob behind petrol tap ) Leave the throttle alone -then slow it down when engine warm. Once warm mine will start with out touching tickover. Do this and follow the " Over compression advise " in previous replies and you should be fine. If it has been on its side or upside down, then turn petrol off and kick it with a steady half throttle.
2K - 2 1/2 K seems to buy a well cared for 03 ish example - I think you learn a lot by looking at the owner ! A few good looking ones sub 2 K on Flee Bay of late.
With a small amount of work it is possible to make them go a fair bit better than stock. A good aftermarket end can is worth having ( FMF or similar)
    Good luck,
    They are great bikes.

CAn vouch that the 450exc is complete handfull. And for the privelege of an extra 50cc's you can pay an extra £30 in road tax. My friend has a 400EXC with a ktm low seat fitted and the ride hight is a lot lower than my XR
