Can vouch for the KTM 450EXC-RFS...but it's totally worth it for the extra 50cc. I don't mind paying the extra money over what it costs me for the upkeep of my XR400 as they're both differant characters & both put a differant smile on my face when I ride them.

Ridden a 400 and very impressed.. but 450 is a better buying option as there more around it seems. Cant see it being so much of an animal over the 400 as it must compare to a WR450 or CRF450xand know plenty who use them with nil bother. All I know is I was always scared of KTM- modern enduro servicing, but after speaking to plenty of trail users of KTMs they are not so different to an XR, and the RFS engines is well proven on reliability..... we will see hey. My mate I ride with says the problem with me is my XR is like my old dog and Im finding it hard to bring myself to replace it with a new pet

The old Harley Davidson Rider's saying also fit's for XR400's.

" If I have to Explain, You would not understand

There is no other trail bike around that engine size that can be used like a XR400.

Trail ride it ,Race it, go touring on it, ride it to work. just change the oil and filter and ride it.

30,000 on my bike now with no problem's

All my mate's on KTM's must have spent £££ keeping thier bike's going.

I also don't under stand why people have a problem starting XR4's...tickle this squeeze that ,and pray.

Maybe it's because I had may years on brit bike's but all I ever do is put the choke on ,get to TDC ,pull de-compressor slightly and push kick start over TDC let go of De -compressor ,let kick start go back to top ,then push down slow and full on the kick start.
work's every time without messing with the tick over .

    Sorry I know I'm a Xr400 Lover

    Re: XR 400

Thats interesting dasser, my XR 4 seems very reluctant to start unless I have a fast tickover. However I do like to ride with the tickover set very low. Perhaps yours is set higher and you can just leave it alone. Try starting it from cold with tickover set at the point where it will only just run when hot - let me know ? I would not let the lack of an electric start put me off buying one. Dasser is right , they will do anything.

Oh I agree the XR is a great bike, in fact possibly the best I have owned. Never a problem to start........... until Im halfway up a slagheap, scrabbling for grip.. or a deep rut in a bog!!
Alas I do fancy a change though and maybe it will be the wrong move... and if thats the case I can always get another
