new to the forum, my bike......

    hello all

im new to the forum so id just like to say hi to everyone.

so here is my xr 125 l4

when i bought it 2 months ago ( for 325 pounds! ) it was in a poor state of affairs. it was left out in the weather for 12 months so the rain took its toll abit in regards to a little rust here and there. everything works as it should. i changed the oil, air filter and spark plug and all is well.the only problems i have are:

noisy top end ( now fixed by adjusting the tappets )

gear change gets stiff, clunky when warm

    and thats it!

there is one question i have tho, the emissions valve thingy....

and there is a sensor? on the carb. on the older cg engines they dont have it and apparently they are alot smoother?

is there anyway to bypass it?

    what effect would it have?

sorry for the questions on my 2nd post

    Mark

Soz got no idea about the Exhaust gas recirculation (egr) valves on these, and changing gear on it's own sounds really bad!
This is what you get for buying an old ratter!

Hi Mark, not an XR man myself but it looks like you've brought the 125 back to a decent condition.

hi guys............. i sense a little sarcasm here.lol

i wouldnt exactly call it an old rattler dude, its only 6 years old! its done 18k miles so i know its not perfect..... i used silkolene oil on the change as its pretty good oil and a hotter plug.( 9 instead of an 8 )

i was just wondering about the ****ty gear shift.any ideas?

I had a CG about the same mileage and had to change the clutch friction plates, as the oil warmed up the clutch plates started to slip after releasing the clutch lever.
You may made need to do this but most of all check the clutch adjustment on the left lever, you want to be pulling plenty of clutch out when you sqeeze the clutch lever releasing the plates with just a little slack at the start point of compressing the clutch lever. It could be that you are not actually selecting the gears properly so it jumps back to the original gear it was in.

The clutch can be adjusted down by the engine but just try to adjust it here first.

Clutch friction plates. If the metals ones have worn smooth too with no pitted surface you will nedd to replace the metal ones too.

I would'nt spend too much money though rebuilding this engine, just pass your test on it and put it up for parts.

    Mark
Not sure about the gear change on these but will suggest if it has linkages from the pedal to the output shaft make sure the linkages are free and well greased up surprising what winter salt etc will partially seize over a period of time. If the lever is directly connected to the output shaft forget everything i just said
Does it ever jump out of gear when your riding it ?

Re: new to the forum, my bike......

    thank you jasonbc and Esoteric1.

its never jumped out of gear.

( when hot ) ..........if im coming to a stop, like at traffic lights, and im going back down the gears ( all at once with clutch in at slow speed & going down gradually selecting all and releasing clutch in between ) it gets clunky and sometimes jams before hitting first.

when i pull off and its hot, its kinda clunky but 1/2 a mile down the road and its fine again. selecting neutral at a standstill has never been a problem, small blip of the throttle to help it engage.( normal right? ) selecting neutral coming to a stop is normal - no probs.
