Start the bike up in the garage or somewhere dark ( I'm sure you know a few good locations )
and, without being arrested, check for any sparks that might be flying about at or around the plug, leads etc. You'll see them in the dark hopefully.

Might bet is on a hairline crack on either the lead or the plug connector.

    Hope this helps

Good thinking Lowflyer only thing i cant get my head around is why putting the choke on keeps it running if its having electrical problems this would have me looking for blocked jets in the carb
Anyhow hope you sort it soon boris

I know. I thought it might be the increased load of revving the engine (regardless how gently I try and do it) putting a bigger load on an already weak spark but I'm clutching at straws. Once the engine has been running for a few minutes (well lots in the case of the river soaking) it's either a bit more tolerant or the heat has dried things up a bit.

I checked all the HT connections today and they all looked OK. There isn't enough length in the existing cable to cut any off and remake the connections. I did take the resistor out the plug as some say that helps. The spring holding it in was a bit black at one end inferring there had been some arcing inside the suppressor cap so I cleaned it up. I also gave the inside and outside a spray with wd40.

As ever it started no problem afterwards but that's normal when the bike is dry. It's the thought of being stuck in the arse end of beyond with a wet bike that bothers me. I really would like to get to the bottom of it.

I think I'll change the plug lead as it's so short it's practically impossible to remove from the plug without removing the tank first. It's could well have been strained at some time in the past.

Can you put a new HT lead in the coil or is it sealed in?

I suspect the problem may be at the coil end as I normally give the bike a good hosing down after a muddy day and it always starts fine right afterwards. The only times I've had problems were once when the bike fell over (with me on it) in a river and the other time when I gunked it (I had removed the tank). Both times I reckon the coil got a good soaking which is something that wouldn't normally happen with the tank on.

after you've drowned the XR, take it out of the river/puddle, let it drip dry, then take out the spark plug, manual decomp lever in, kick it a few times to clear out the water in the bore, plug back in, WD40 into the lead...then kick it in the guts...if u dont get rid of the water, have the possibilty of hydraulicking the motor, and thats no fun...even on a low comp single cylinder. Give it a few kicks and she should start!

When i went through this puddle, the first thing i did was take the spark plug out and pump the motor out after a long time of it not wanting to start we picked it up and carried it out and put it on the trailer and towed it home. Got it home took the carb out and cleaned that to get the mud out of it then refitted it. Then i drained the motor and frame and filled it with diesel and ran it for a a few minutes then drained it again and refilled it with diesel again and ran it for a few more minutes and drained it and cleaned both the strainers and replaced the oil filter. Filled it up with oil, I only put cheap rock motorcycle oil in then ran it for a couple hundred miles then changed the oil again and filled it with Rock Guardian as normal.

Before anybody says it the diesel had no issues and did not cause the clutch to slip

the Diesel would work as it has detergents n all sortsa corrosion inhibitors in it, and its nearly got the
same make up as crude oil, so if ya stuck n have 2L of diesel...well you can use ya imagination. well done bud!
