    xr problems

hi long time since i have posted here. sold an xr400 to my friend that had stood up in my garage the last couple of years my friend has spent a fair bit getting it sorted out and mot'ed the carb was all ****ted up and he had to replace a few bits in it as it was leaking petrol. the bike now wont start and he said it is blowing back air into the carb when its being kicked over? also the decompressor cable snapped. have you got any ideas what the problem could be hes saying something is wrong with the valves could be the problem. looks like im going to be getting the bike back as hes had enough of it letting him down.

Decompressor cable isn't an issue as the 400 is manually activated, you could activate it with you thumb if you want to if it has no cable. If he means leaking fuel, from where? could be coming out the overflow pipe if the carb was gummed up. Can't imagine for one minute it's valves or anything if bike was running fine before you sold it. Personally i would throw some fresh fuel in it check the plug and see what happens. Also why didn't the MOT station help him out getting it sorted? must have been running for him to get it there

If the carb has had some dried fuel sitting in there for quite a while i'd suspect the primary jet & the air jet feeding it. Check all parts of the carb & that the air-screw has the very small 'O' ring in place as this minute part can cause problems if damaged or missing.

the carb was all ****tied up with fuel residue and he had to replace a few parts in the carb it was coming out the overflow pipe the float wasnt cutting off the bike was running when it went for the mot it started playing up when he rode it home it was leaking fuel whilst it was running. i think he has sold it to his m8 who is a mechanic.
