    Re: xtz project

    Xander,

I had a problem of my bike leaning over too much after raising the suspension - i took off the stand and cut about 4 " off the bottom of the leg, then welded in a large steel threaded bolt inside the leg, with a new steel tube covering the joint, then welded back on the bottom bit i cut off - if that makes sense - basically i extended the leg by about 2" to get it back to the correct lean angle when parked.

I know its not adjustable, but it was the easiest fix for me.

    Ant.

When I put the long ohlins in my bike, I had to extend both stands, not to hard, we used some solid bar in the center to add a bit of strength.

Some trick XTZ660 bits available here

    ok...

first question why do you need to adjust the stand on the fly... have you ever needed to adjust a stock stand (with stock ride height) on the fly? Adjusting the stand were making is by simply adding or removing the spacers, these will be ally so the weight increase should be minimal, when you have the length you want its either locktite or a small grub screw to lock it solid. As you say Xander KISS is a must.

for making up the mock ups we use polystyrene foam ( cheap from any builders merchants) in a slab form, it can be roughly shaped with a knife and then 'sanded', over the top this put a layer of packing tape and then 'soft body filler'... sand the whole lot back to the shape and surface you want... I apply a coat of HD coach paint between filler layers (normally 3 minimum ) as this prevents the soft filler becoming porous and screwing up the mould. We built a proto type Dakar escort (full on WRC 4X4 monster) for ford back in '98 using mesh as the base, its good for small a curvy areas but a nightmare for larger and flat surfaces...

sadly BYrd (belgarda racing) is producing sod all for the XTZ750 all the bits they are making (and have for several years now) are for the thumper.. if you want cheap BYrd raid bits then have a hunt around the boys in Dubai as that is the last round of the fia championship and thats were the bikes get stripped post season!!!

was going to post up the pics of the bodywork (top fairing, front n/s air duct and both rear hecktanks now 75% done) but like a moron left me phone with the pics on in the truck...DoHHHHHH

However on the flip side more goodies have arrived... Touratech IMO sport, Polisport mudguards, spare fuel tank (to be modified) and the tap i was waiting for to finish the top yoke....

Current jobs on the go: new LED rear light cluster, rear rack, and loom....

I like the idea of the grub screw.. now were to find the bits and bobs,,,,

As for adjusting it on the fly.. really I dont.. but I am a geek tweaker that is the son of a industrial chemical engineer .who taught me mostly everything I know about engines and tools. thus I always think of the most complicated fancy fangled way of doing something.. then I wake up and so it simple! ..

The (unjustifiable) justification for on the fly adjustment.. is simply it would be cool to be able to park on an angled bit of ground and adjust the stand as needed... (but even that would be far more hassle then it would be worth)... just imagine balancing the bike fully loaded as you are lengthening the arm, and you make it too long or to short and squish... ) See i come up with these things and then abandon them... hey I even mocked up a push button hydrolic center stand. out of a bunch of parts we were throwing out in the lab. yes it worked and it could have been fitted easily enough.. but why was the most important question.. the answer i got to look like i was working but really just playing...

Jenna - when you say 'thumper' are you talking about the XT600 / XT660 and where can I find the parts they are still making? - is there a weblink available? And I know it's asking a lot, but do you also have any contact details/links for the 'boys in Dubai'

    Re: xtz project

na sorry stormforce all the current bits are for the xtz660 which is a different frame to the xt. they were behind the 2004 dakar proto (think it was no'81) which was hinted as bing a test bike but 3 years on and nothing has appeared. on the flip side its byrd that are making the new ttr600 race bikes on the quiet for Yamaha France!

If your looking at buying bits out of Dubai then ask on adv first coz most the guys in Dubai are frequent forum posters otherwise have a look in the sponsors list for the uae desert challenge.

Xander your a tinkerer.... repeat after me ..."if its not bust dont FIX it!!"
