TTR 250 woes

Hi all
i need some advice please
i have recently sold my trusty XR400R and later replaced it with TTR250
great bike BUT she WILL NOT tick over after closing the throttle
what do i do - remember please that although i will have a go at most things i am no technical expert!
people have said adjust idle mixture screw by 1/2 turn - may have helped but not convinced
any thoughts
