My brother is looking at a '93 Super Tenere, it looks in pretty good nick, has done about 40,000 KMs.
Anyone have any pointers what to look for when taking the bike for a test ride?

'07 KTM 990 Adventure (Crash Bars, Scottoilter, 16t front sprocket, Throttle Cam. Colour: Black & Grey)
'93 DR800 BIG (Fully farkled!)

'04 Tiger (MRA-Vario screen, Crash bars, K&N Airfilter, dual headlamp upgrade. Colour: orange, 'cause I'm Dutch, innit!)

first and foremost take off the front sprocket cover and check the splines on the gearbox output shaft, if they are warn or worse still the sprocket is welded on WALK AWAY! as thats a £300+ repair bill.
Frames suffer if abused above the rear engine top mount, check for cracks!
wheels corrode from inside out so look for blisters in the ally!
Electrics suffer with age, get the seat off and check the wiring for burnt wires!
XTZ bodywork is now getting a bit thin in the UK so look behind the panels for repairs, the fairing wings are always the first to get it if the bike is dropped!
other issues are excessive oil consumption on worn engines, likewise the valves need shims changing over time... parts like exhausts are hideously expensive from yamaha so look for rust if its got an aging steel set up.
That all said they are a great bike, and those of us that have had one seldom part with them (most owners have more than one!)... any questions then check out the XTZ forum.

looking where you are and the fact its a KMs bike i would guess its at a Harrow bike dealers and is an import!... if so you will find a much cheaper bike through the forum.

yep the XTZ forum has been keeping an eye on it for a few weeks now... if the guy is after a bike that is sorted then you wont buy better than Rich's XTZ850, at £2750 its a bargin for whats been spent on it.
