Not a trailie - but opinions please

I want a "proper road tourer" (In addition to my Honda TA650).

I'm thinking of buying a Yam FJR1300. Maybe new, maybe last year's, secondhand (20,000 miles old).

Anyone ridden or owned one? Opinions please?

Do they compare well to Honda Pans? How about compared to big Beemers?

I would stick with a Honda, I had a couple of Yamaha's and the later bikes seem to be made or cheaper materials than the Honda.

Re: Not a trailie - but opinions please

Couple of guys on our station has them and one has done 30k on his and loves it as his best ever bike and is getting another. The other one is also very happy with his. I dont think their build quality is any worse than some reports Ive heard of Spanish built Hondas!! And it seems these days nothing is safe from poorer quality and its up to you how well it gets looked after. A lot of plod are using them now as well after the troubles with pan euros

Dutch police have switched from Honda & BMW to Yamaha for most of their bike needs (only use TA's and 650GS's for city cops now). They use the Yamaha FJR1300 and TDM900.

When I had my FJ1200s I found these people quite useful. They also cover the FJR13 now.

2000 XRV750 (NO 3), I think I'm getting the hang of them now, must fit the centrestand before the back tyre wears out. Damn, the driveshaft bearing wore out first!

serv have /had one which i took from brighton to hastings and then up to silverstone and back. they are a nice bike, more sporty than a pan, loads of room, and the engine has loads of grunt (but not as quick as a busa!!!) I liked riding it, although it was quite heavy. try and blag a ride on one.

Re: Not a trailie - but opinions please

Can't speak for the FJ but generally get good reports. If you want to know about an RT I can tell you they are not quick or sporty but can be ridden until you run out of fuel or steam!

Nice easy bike to ride to the point of being bland if you want more from them, as they just ride themselves and do exactly what they say on the tin. Great bike for pillion comfort. I can assure you they take very little looking after too. I'm on my second one now only because I fancied a change of colour!

Hardest thing for most people buying these is getting their head round buyin one over 25-30,000. They only really come to life after some miles. I really noticed the diference going from my 70ker to a 6ker. And then wallop at 27,000 it just started to shift?!?!

Re: Not a trailie - but opinions please

I was in France with a couple on an FJR. They loved it said he wasn't even thinking about changing it. Couldn't keep up with my ADV on the motorway coming back from Portsmouth.

Crap rider it should have left me for dead.

I've still got my FJ (which is a great bike) and know a few people who have FJR. They really rate 'em, very few complaints at all. I think the major issues are the screen (turbulence) and an undersprung OEM rear shock (most people change them). Yen's pointed your to the right direction over at FJ/FJR Sports Tourers - Flash Intro for owners point of view and lastly markincyberspace who is (or was?) on this forum bought an FJR.
