i agree the vid is a bit naff, and yamaha are nearly bust, so it might never happen, but if the new 1200 is simply going to be a big brother version of the 660 then it cant be bad, can it?
from what ive read it'll have a p/twin with shaft drive.
As the thread title suggests, it is what is known in the advertising trade as a 'teaser' vid. Designed to wet your appetite, promote the brand and concept and test the market reaction prior to launch. Obviously market conditions, and the well publiscised financial position of Yamaha, mean that they are not in a position to launch the product into a depressed market.
Watch out for more subtle teasers and advertising from Yam along the same lines, gradually revealing more and more of the product features and styling, building up to the eventual bike launch at a time when Yamaha feel thatmarket conditions and potential demand is at a level to ensure sales success.
I for one enjoyed the vid, and am looking forward to the new Super Ten. I was always a big fan of the original. It could be a viable and price competitive alternative to overpriced BMW GS and KTM ADV range. and dare I say it may even beat the big H to market ans steal their thunder from the suposed and much talked about new XL1200.
I hasten to point out I have nothing to do with Yamaha or their dealers. Just a big fan of the original Super Ten
I just naively wish they would make a proper overland bike.
It won't happen of course. The public is far more in love with the idea or illusion of adventure at the drop of a hat than the actual thing, as demonstrated by a proposed 1200cc engine (!?!).
I think the closest they have got recently to a proper trip bike is either the 800gs, or the Yam tenere, but both are still steeped in electronics....
Nice dual-sport, light, aircooled 600 twin with carbs, fat 500w generator and easy to work on... Yeah, right!!
There's nothing wrong with electronics, as long as they're working!!!!!
Now if they'd give us a bike, that has electronics, and a diagnostic function built into the instruments that said "fuel pressure low" or "cdi error" or something similarly useful that would be helpful.

the purpose of the vid is generate media interest... you know like get people talking about it in the forums (guess it failed on that front then)
There are few reasons for some of the choices that the vid hints at, some engineering... some to do with legislation and some to with production. Side rads have used on a few builds and have proven to be as good as conventional rads in efficiency, when protected by bodywork or sub frames they are no more damage prone than any other. The information coming out clearly puts the engine in the same family lineage as the 3LD, 3VD, 4TX, 4UN and 5PS engine of the XTZ and TDM range with this in mind I seriously doubt that 1200cc is the final choice as this engine even in its current 900cc format is not capable of a 33% capacity increase... sensible money would be on a 949 or at a stretch 998/999cc# long throw big bore top end grafted to the current 6 speed 5PS TDM unit. Yamaha are keen to highlight the use of ebs, however the spec is comparable to that of other builds currently on sale from Yamaha so this would require minimal re-engineering for the new bike... all in all the biggest surprise is the return to a dual beam shaft drive swing arm.

900cc 5PS engine = 92 x 67.5 mm
most likely for a 1200cc 'new' engine = 106 x 67.9mm which isnt feaseable with the 5PS crankcase as the throw is to long, the current crankcase also could could not accept a larger bore as piston skirt will hit the case!.... that then means a new crankcase (which was only just re-engineered for the tdm900 anyway) and unless this engine is destined to fit the tdm too its a bit of white elephant in the range.
