[edit] Uploading pictures to the forum
This is a work in progress document. I expect everyone to be amending to provide a better overall document for everyone. So don't be shy, if this document isn't clear or needs a little more, amend it to make it clearer.
[edit] Technical Information
This site now uses vBulletin 3.6 as the forum software and Photopost PHP Pro as the picture gallery software. The two are interlinked by various mods.
[edit] Step 1: Upload pictures to the Picture Gallery
You have a choice here either to use an on-line gallery such as SmugMug or Flickr or use the XRV site's built in Picture Gallery.
Either way you must first upload your photo's. The next steps assume you will be using the XRV site's built in gallery.
- Note: 1 - You should check to ensure that you are logged in to the forums. There is no need to be separately logged on to the Picture Gallery. If you are not logged on you will not see your username. In the image the user Test is displayed as the user Test is logged on.
- You now need to consider where you would like to upload your pictures to. We don't want people uploading pictures to just anywhere in the Picture Gallery, we like you to be organised. :-)
- You have several options as to where to upload your pictures to:
- The Member Galleries - This is the default and will upload them to a central members area in a space that's been created just for you. The space is named after your username, so in the case of the Test user a member gallery called Test will have been created.
- Categories - These are Administrator created categories, and are pretty obvious if you look through. If you want an Administrator to create a new category then please ask in the Problem Forum.
- Personal Albums - These are created by you and you may like to consider creating a new one now before you upload your pictures. e.g. You could create one called Welsh Rideout 030307 to put your pictures in. You can add a new album by selecting My Albums and then Create a new album.
- You will see the image above giving you the upload page.
- You now need to select the Category or personal album that you wish to upload to. The personal album's are selected from a separate drop down underneath the Category selection only if you've created them. If you haven't created any personal albums you won't see this extra drop down.
- You will see that you have multiple boxes (where the browse buttons are) to upload photo's. This means you can upload more than one file at a time, up to 10 in fact.
- Selecting browse will display the Windows file dialog box which will allow you to go and find the picture that you want to upload. Pictures on a Windows XP machine will normally be stored in My Documents / My Pictures. When you've selected the picture the path to that picture will appear in the input box next to the Browse button.
- You can repeat this process up to 10 times to upload multiple pictures.
- Set the title of the picture, description and keywords for a single picture or for multiple pictures you'll be given a chance to do this as part of the upload process.
- Note you have some advanced options towards the bottom of the page that are beyond the scope of this article.
- When you've selected all your pictures press Submit. There are two submit buttons on the page, they both do the same thing.
- Your picture/s will now be uploaded. If you've selected multiple pictures you will be given an interim page allowing you to set the title's and descriptions for each one. If you've selected quite a few it can take some time depending on the speed of your internet connection. If you think the page has stopped responding, selecting refresh or reloading it normally kicks it back in to action. The upload process is intelligent enough to know not to duplicate the photo's so should just pick up from where it left off.
- As part of the upload process the pictures are resized and thumbnails created so you don't need to worry about resizing them before uploading.
- When the process is complete you will be taken to your personal Picture Gallery view showing the pictures you've uploaded.
- You've now successfully complete the upload process. Well done!
[edit] Step 2: Insert your pictures in to a post on the forum
- First step is to start a new post or reply to a post in the forum.
- Underneath the Smilies box on the right hand side is a link My Pics.
- Clicking this opens a pop-up window (example below) showing all your pictures that you've uploaded. It show the newest uploaded first.
- Make sure that the boxes at the top show Clickable thumb (new window) and Inline. Then select the pictures you want by clicking on them. As you click they will automatically be added to your new post or reply. When you have finished selecting pictures close the pop-up window.
- You can intersperse text with the pictures quite happily you don't have to have them grouped together.
- Submit your post
