My 2001 AT has 18,000 miles on it. It runs poorly and stumbles and vibrates a lot. Over the winter I think a carb strip and rebuild is in order.
Any thought as to have far should I go?
Fit new jets, gaskets, etc?

The mixture on the front cylinder is rich and this foul the plugs up with carbon, which means I must clean or replace them often, the other cylinders fine,I did a trip to Malawi in October last year and had to change the plugs every 2000km. Is this the jets or air/ fuel mixture screwed?

There is fuel in the tank but the battery only lasted about a minute but at least we got a backfire.
The battery is now on charge.
Do I need to alter the standard carb settings after putting bigger jets in for the free flowing carb

Standard pipe with the standard insert REMOVED (can't believe I found a bike with that still in it tbh) and a bit of open pipe bolted in to keep it a tad quieter.
I have been scouring the net to find a carb needle and jets to set up a Keihin FCR 41 carb I found on ebay.
Allens dont have the needle and the only places I could find one is in the states which will take forever to get here.
I found one in Holland but they want €40 for it. :mad::mad::mad:

I've ordered some alternative main jets for altitude. In the XR400 Haynes manual it says the main jet can be removed via the drain plug on the float bowl. Honda don't supply whatever type spanner is used for this, does anybody know what size and type of spanner fits?

When I twist the throttle quickly, fully (on low rev) the engine is "drowning" (or struggling, dont know how to describe, basicly loses power) instead of rev up immediately as it used too. If I twist the throttle slower everything is fine, no power loss.
